Sihala Urumaya - Main Committee
S. L. Gunesekara, President – As one of Sri Lanka’s leading lawyers S. L., attended the now historic Thimpo talks. Here President Jayawardene’s Government, with the help of the SAARC countries tried to and did negotiate a peaceful settlement for the demands of the LTTE. As a pre condition for participating in talks the Tigers demanded for and got a cease fire, which they promptly violated. This has been the pattern of all subsequent peace talks. S. L. was one of the more prominent opponents of the dilution of the sovereignity of the state.
Thilak Karunaratne, General Secretary – Thilak, as a Parliamentarian, is fully aware of the way in which Government policies are used for personal gain by the Sri Lankan Politician. He tried both of the main political parties and found them both sadly lacking in his endeavour to serve the country. This resulted in his leaving a comfortable seat in Parliament, to join Sihala Urumaya in its campaign on behalf of the Sinhala People.
Patali Champika Ranawaka, National Organiser – Champika is a lecturer in the Open University. He himself a victim, is acutely concisious of the damage done to the Sinhala youth by the Bandaranayaka regime. Prime minister Sirimavo, again to whip up votes, brought the ‘Sinhala only Policy’ into the then existing system of education. This made the Sinhala youth a non-contender in the field of employment.
Dr. Neville Karunatileka, Treasure – A former Governor of the Central Bank. Neville’s awareness of the ruination of the country’s economy by the Bandaranayakas socialistic policies is comprehensive.
Major General Tilak Paranagama – The only General officer in the Sri Lankan Army to have risen from the ranks of a soldier.
Lieutenant Colonel Anil Amerasekara – Whilst serving as a Lieutenant Colonel Anil asked for and obtained compulsory leave from the Sri Lankan Army to campaign against the Political package.
Malinga Herman Guneratne – Author of ‘For a Sovereign State’, Malinga was persecuted by the UNP Government for settling the Sinhala farmer on the right- bank of Maduru Oya.
These and a galaxy of intellectuals of National fame such as, Professor Piyasena Dissanayaka, Professor C. M. Madduma Bandara, Professor A. D. V. de S. Indraratne and Dr. Ranjini Ratnapala are among the members of the central committee.
The following are the seven non-negotiable principals the party is standing for:
